Communications Officer Volunteer

Voluntary

Who are we:

Selfhood fights for your right to define and experience gender however you choose. We are a movement of optimists, fighters, and dreamers.

Selfhood exists at the intersection of the feminist and queer liberation movements. We believe that these fights must be tackled together and cannot be ignored. We approach the fight for gender liberation from two sides: bold campaigning and a commitment to grassroots activism.

The Role:

We are recruiting for multiple Communications Officers to deliver the day to day function in our Communications team. We are looking for individuals with a minimum of  1 year’s professional experience in at least two of the following areas:

  •  Social Media
    • Proficiency in creating and managing content for Instagram and Twitter.
    • Experience in planning and scheduling, and community management
  •  Creative Design
    • Strong graphic design abilities using Canva or equivalent.
    • Proficiency in video editing.
  •  Copywriting for Campaigns
    • Hard hitting social media copy
    • Campaign emails and blogs
  •  SEO and Website Development
    • Experience with Wix, Squarespace, Wordpress or similar.
    •  Any experience of html or CSS is an advantage.
  •  Press/PR
    • Experience working with journalists
    • Experience writing and distributing press releases

We are not expecting any one candidate to meet every requirement on this list. We would encourage you to apply if you meet a minimum of two.

We are also keen for a candidate for one of these positions to take on more of a leadership, project management role in the Communications team. If you have 4+ years professional experience in 2+ of the above areas, we’re also keen to hear about any experience you have:

  • Designing, developing, and delivering on a communications strategy
  • Project managing multi-channel communications plans
  • Managing direct reports
  • Working with volunteers to deliver a communications plan

At Selfhood, we work in a largely non-hierarchical way by using a shared leadership approach while recognising the range of experience (both personal and professional) we have in the team. We operate as a grassroots collective of activists on a shoestring budget powered by dedicated activists.

How to apply:

Please apply by submitting a CV along with your answers in a separate document or the open text field to the following questions:

  1. Which of the above skills and experience do you have? Please detail the experience you have in each area and provide a specific example of a time you used those skills.
  2. Discuss your approach to copywriting for campaigns. How do you adapt your writing style to suit different audiences or campaign objectives?
  3. Please share an example of any piece of comms work that you are most proud of. This could be personal or professional work you did for a non-profit campaign, advertising, press work, PR stunt etc. In your answer please detail what the objectives of the work were and how you met them.
  4. How would you integrate intersectionality and feminist ethics into your communications strategies and content creation?

We are seeking people of all genders, ages, backgrounds, and abilities who are keen to help us shape the future of our movement, network, and organisation.

We recognise that feminist spaces and opportunities are often full of white women. We are looking for people of all backgrounds with voices that are under-represented in this sector, specifically gender non-conforming individuals, men, trans people, and people of colour.

Currently, we are only accepting applications from individuals eighteen years of age or older.
